Ages I go I wrote on my newspaper column the Powder Room about the trout pout and the trend for overzsize lips. PEOPLE ARE STILL DOING IT... and , as Kylie would say, I (still) can’t get it out of my head.

I’m all for enhancing your features and trying to look the best you can, but let’s not overdo it. And it’s not just the make-up that can be questionable. Let’s talk about the selfie craze for pouting.

Great big pouty lips are everywhere it seems.

The selfie craze is in full flow and I rarely see a photograph of a young girl displaying a natural, relaxed smile anymore.

And I think it’s a real shame!

I decided to do a bit of homework on the subject and see what the word on the street was.

I asked various people of all ages, men and women, what they

thought. I showed each of them a photograph of a young girl smiling or laughing naturally, then one of the selfie pout.

The results were:

Ladies - The girls didn’t really

notice or comment on the pouting, instead they noticed her hair and make up.

The smiling ones, however, made them smile too and look at the photo a little longer.

Now for the men. Each man shook his head at the pouting photo, handed it straight back and either laughed, tutted or remarked.

However, when I showed them the photographs of the natural smile, they paused, looked longer

and commented on how pretty each one was. So it seems that the forced pout just gives the impression of trying too hard.

Young girls seem to be under more and more pressure to stand out and it’s a shame that they feel so self conscious about their image that they have to go over the top with their look and poses on social media.

I see heavily contoured faces every day on the street as youngsters walk along constantly taking selfies and I think it’s a pity.

Understated natural beauty and elegance is unforgettable, in make-up and in living - and it would be great to encourage young girls to pursue that instead of spending hours perfecting the facial contortions of the selfie pout.
